Drums over Guns at Afiwi Groove School is proposed to address the pressing need for positive youth engagement and community safety through music-based interventions in the Durham Region. Black Youth, for socio-economic reasons, often do not have access to Arts Education and programming for self-expression and positive outlets.
Are you ready to become a leader in your community and create positive change? Join us for the "Drums Over Guns Youth Leadership Workshop," an inspiring, action-packed session designed to equip young leaders like you with the tools to build resilience, set meaningful goals, and lead with confidence. Through Afrocentric drumming and transformative activities, this workshop will guide you on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Here's what you can expect:
In the Durham Region, youth violence and crime rates are alarmingly high, stemming from various socio-economic factors. Drums over Guns seeks to provide an alternative path for youth by offering constructive activities that promote personal growth and social responsibility, ultimately reducing involvement in violence and crime.
In African culture, music, particularly drumming, has the potential to transcend barriers and unite people; hence, the drums are often played in circles. By introducing youth to the art of drumming and music composition, the project aims to instill discipline, creativity, and teamwork, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose among participants.
By offering drumming, skills development workshops, and opportunities for community engagement, Drums over Guns aims to empower youth to become leaders and change-makers within their communities. This project will amplify their voices and contributions to community development by equipping them with valuable life skills.
